Awakening Is Not a Tool

Awakening Is Not a Tool

One of the most common mistakes after a glimpse of awakening is returning to the old habit of seeking answers through thought and understanding.

You worry about your future, your income, and your survival. But has worrying itself ever sustained your life? Practical matters require practical action, not endless anxiety.

Take care of your responsibilities, but do not mistake the survival of the body for the discovery of your true Self.

Awakening is not a tool to improve your life. It is the fundamental discovery of what you are, prior to the body and the life you call your own.

An initial awakening may happen in an instant. But breaking free from a lifetime of deeply rooted habits takes time. This is why the old Seon masters emphasized continuing to hear the Dharma from a clear eyed teacher after awakening.

Do not merely remember your experience or turn it into another concept to understand.

Look again. Who are you, before the body, before thought, before the life you are trying so hard to sustain?
