Why Awakening Cannot Come Through Knowledge or Understanding

Why Awakening Cannot Come Through Knowledge or Understanding

There Is No Dog in a Hot Dog

The observation that there is no dog in a hot dog, nor any baby in baby oil, is more than a lighthearted linguistic curiosity. Through the lens of Seon, this mismatch exposes a fundamental cognitive illusion, mistaking the label for reality.

Words are pointers directed outward. Human minds construct a world of concepts and fixed definitions, continuously confusing temporary labels with actual existence. The Diamond Sutra cuts through this delusion directly:

“A is not A; therefore, it is named A.”

A name is never the reality itself it is an empty signifier including your name.

When told that words are merely pointers, the intellect instinctively looks toward the object being pointed at. Yet, analyzing the object still keeps consciousness bound to external phenomena.

Seon does not ask us to examine where the finger points, nor where the light of attention falls. It demands Hwegoang-banjo (廻光返照) reversing the light to trace it back directly to its Source.

Stop chasing the objects illuminated by thought. When you stop following the light outward and trace it back to the origin from which all names, concepts, and perceptions arise, the labels dissolve.

There is no dog, no hot dog, and no conceptual world to grasp only the unborn Source, clear and self-evident.
