This is Seon
1. What Is Patriarchal Seon?
Patriarchal Seon points directly to our true nature so that we can recognize it for ourselves. Rather than relying on complicated theories or practices, it emphasizes direct realization through the pointing of a teacher.
2. The Essence of “Seon”
We often mistake what we have learned, thought, and believed for the truth. These concepts can prevent us from seeing who we really are. The question “Who Am I?” is not an intellectual puzzle to solve, but a direct inquiry into our true nature beyond concepts and beliefs.
3. How Do Thoughts and Worries Come to Rest?
Instead of trying to force our thoughts to stop, we listen deeply to the Seon teaching and see what it points to. When we turn our attention to our true nature, unnecessary thoughts and attachments can naturally settle down.
4. Words and Scriptures Are Means, Not the Truth Itself
Words and scriptures are like a finger pointing at the moon. They help us recognize the truth, but they are not the truth itself. We should use them as pointers without becoming attached to the words.
5. Do Not Become Attached to Enlightenment
Even the idea that we have attained enlightenment can become another attachment. True freedom means not clinging to any spiritual experience, achievement, or concept of truth.
6. The Purpose of Seon Is Freedom in Everyday Life
Seon is not about acquiring special knowledge or reaching an extraordinary state. It is about seeing through the mistaken beliefs that cause suffering and recognizing the freedom of our true nature in everyday life.
